چکیده

Nitrogen and carbon emissions and plant nutrient leaching during storage of solid deep litter from dairy cow houses was examined in this study. Included was an assessment of the potential for reducing emission and leaching losses by compaction, mixing and by covering the deep litter. During a composting period of 132 days from October 1998 to March 1999, emissions of NH3, N2O and CH4 and leaching of nutrients during composting were measured. Denitrification was estimated as N unaccounted for in N mass balance calculations. During mixing of the deep litter, N was lost and the emission and leaching losses during composting were consequently low compared with the other treatments. Covering the compost with a porous tarpaulin or compacting the compost reduced emission losses to 12–18% of total-N compared with a loss of 28% during composting of untreated deep litter. Most of the nitrogen loss was due to NH3 volatilization; leaching accounted for about one fifth of the N losses and only a little N was lost due to denitrification. Leaching loss of potassium (K) was 8–16% of the amount present at the start of the experiment; compaction and a cover reduced the volume of liquid leaching from the heaps and K loss. Less than 0.3% of the total-N was emitted as N2O, and CH4 emission was between 0.01 and 0.03% of the C in the stored deep litter. The yield level of barley was poor in this study and the fertilizer effect of compost was low. The yield response of barley showed that compost had a significantly lower fertilizer efficiency than deep litter applied to the field directly after emptying the animal house. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper proposes a stochastic application of a deterministic model (LEACHN) with the aim of forecasting the probability of exceeding given nitrate leaching levels for different cropping systems and soil hydrological characteristics. The understanding of the level of probability associated to the prediction of leaching is an important criteria for the judgement of cropping systems. After cali...

The release of nitrogen by roots of intact spring wheat plants into the soil and other losses, mainly of volatile N, have been investigated in two subsequent years from tillering until maturation, by use of a new technique for plant labelling with N. Plants were at first labelled by growing them in a N nutrient solution until tillering and then after thoroughly washing the roots with distilled ...

Explicit modeling of business processes and their enactment in work ̄ow systems have proved to be valuable in increasing the ef®ciency of work in organizations. We argue that enacted business processes Ð i.e. work ̄ow management systems Ð form a solid basis for adequate information support in complex and knowledge-intensive business processes. To support this claim we demonstrate results from two...

Use of precision farming technologies requires better understanding of soil variability in physical, hydraulic and chemical properties. Some of that variation is natural, some is the result of the management history of the field. So, to match agricultural inputs and practices to site-specific conditions, the factorial kriging algorithm (FKA) was used to analyze spatial variability in some soil ...

A precise prediction of the yield losses inflicted by weeds is the basis of decisions in weed management. Hitherto, only rough estimates, which neglect the specific production situation, have been available for vegetable crops. In this study a simple simulation model was developed to estimate yield loss by radiation competition as a function of environmental variables. In the model, the distrib...
